Women's Cat 1/2/3 Racing

We used to mix masters (then veterans) with women or juniors all the time. Back then veterans meant 40+. There were lots of differences from now though. First, OBRA had less that 100 total juniors and women (all categories) put together. There were also few 40+ riders and they were all slow.

60+ men and women (all ages)might work now to create a larger but still competitive field but I suspect that it would not meet the desires for either group and would not increase their participation.

Encino Velodrome used to do something like that. For the most part, it
worked well. The potential problem is when riders are mixed with major size
differences, such as a large Master with a woman who could be less than half
the weight.

What many are missing (or just not saying) is that this is not a new issue.
In fact, it has existed all the time that I have ridden bikes, over 30
years. It waxes and wanes, but there has never been a sustained period of
large women's fields. I have a question: How would women, and old guys,
feel about racing together? Maybe combine the Cat 1/2/3 women with Cat
1/2/3 60+ (or 50+ non-world champions) men? Both groups lack excess
testosterone so would not be too aggressive, both can handle their bikes
pretty well, and I suspect they would be reasonably competitive. I expect I
will rattle a lot of cages with this suggestion, but what do you think?

I think it would maybe be more reasonable to sometimes combine the 1/2
woman with the master's men and give the woman's 3 their own field.
This might actually be kind of nice in a way when there really are too
few woman's 1/2 to make a real field. I know I enjoy races more when
there are tactics and teamwork involved in the race =)
This way the intermediate woman's field has a chance to ride with
people of their own speed and not feel too threatened to race.

Happy riding =)
