Hey folks........ron strasser here.
I hope to see many of you dirt loving boys and girls at the opening of short
track on Monday. I have been struggling with longer time in the mtb saddle,
but hope this is just right as Goldilocks said! I think it might.
With regard to the Short Track Championships in August....some OBRA presence
at the NWTA Trail Care event on June 10th (that is next Sunday) would be not
only helpful, but show some of the people who do not race, but do work on
trail..................THAT RACERS ARE WILLING TO GIVE SOME TIME TO HELP
WITH WHERE WE RACE. A great way to work out those sore muscles from the
Washougal 6hr!
My focus on the 10th will be working with whoever might show up on the
buffing of the main course to be used for the Short Track event and if we
have the people, may attack the removal of blackberries and brush on a
hillside that could be a run-up for cyclocross.
I have been gathering NEW items to give away on the 10th in a raffle. I do
have some nice stuff (although there are no framesets or big ticket items).
You do not have to purchase anything to be in the raffle. We have raffles
at races and I see no reason why they cannot take place where people help
build trail and or race courses. I have not actually gotten a sponsor for
product, but have been acquiring items over the last five months so the
stuff will be good quality.
Might still get some more before next weekend and might even post what will
be raffled off later in the week.
Come on out and do stuff that helps us have places to ride and race.
Click on the link Kris included about the event.
thanks much for reading and considering.

Subject: [OBRA Chat] Short Track & 6 Hrs - some more updates
Hey Everyone,
For those of you who didn't receive the email I sent out yesterday, a couple
more updates about the Portland Short Track Series (starting this Monday) ,
the Six Hours of Mt Hood (Sun 7/1), and the Oregon STXC State Championships
(Sun 8/12):
1) Portland Short Track Series: 8 Weeks of bike race FUN!
Like last year, the series will run for 8 weeks - all the way through the
last Monday of July - and we'll take a break mid-series when we'll swap our
weekly dose of short track madness for a full day of MTB XC race fun at the
Six Hours of Mount Hood.
2) TODAY is the last day to pre-register online for Monday's race!
Like years past, we offer again online registration for single races. Each
week - until end-of-day Friday - you can register online for the next
upcoming race ($10 for Juniors, $17 for everyone else, $5 for a second race
the same night).
More details:http://www.portlandracing.com/online-registration.html
If you miss the Friday deadline, you can still register at the races, but
you will pay $20 and will have to stand in line at registration and won't
enjoy a call-up at your start. So, be smart, help alleviate the work of our
registration folks, and pre-register today! And to sweeten the deal, every
week we'll raffle off a special prize among all pre-registered riders,
including our series pass holders!
IMPORTANT: All races will start on time. Please schedule enough time to get
to PIR, get all your stuff together, ride your bike from the parking lot to
the infield, and get registered. If you plan to pay for your race on Monday,
we recommend you arrive at PIR at least 1 hour before the start of your
race, because the registration lines on our first day of racing always tend
to be pretty long. Day-of-race registration will open at 4:30pm, so come
early to avoid the lines. And make sure to bring cash or a check book. We do
NOT accept credit cards, although there is an ATM outside the PIR track
(located across from the main race tower, at the SE corner of the PIR road
race track).
3) Please fill out our online Series Race Waiver & Accident Release Form.
Whether you plan to pre-register online or prefer to pay for your races on
race day, please take a minute and fill out our online series waiver &
accident release form. You need to do this only once and you will be all set
for the whole series. It will save on paper, save you time at your first
race (no need to hand-write a paper waiver), and it will make the race
administration at our end much easier. Thanks!
4) Pre-registered riders & race plates:
Like previous years, all racers will receive a unique, laminated series race
plate, which you will receive at your first race and which you will re-use
throughout the series (unless you change categories). These are the only
race plates that will be honored by our officials. If you have purchased a
series pass or pre-registered online for Monday's race, all you need to do
on Monday is pick up your race plate at our separate pre-registration desk
(in front of the race tower) and you're all good to go.
5) FREE weekly clinics for Juniors, Women and novice (and rusty) Men:
In good tradition, longtime series sponsor Bike N Hike will host FREE weekly
clinics for junior racers. In addition, Sorella Forte's Pro/Cat 1 rider
Elaine Both will continue to teach her free women clinics (open to all
women) and SS/Cat 1 rider Ethan Furniss has volunteered to put on a similar,
new clinic for novice men. The 1-hour clinics will be held from 4:30pm to
5:30pm on the short track race course (meet-up is at the bleachers on the
right of the registration tent) and will include a guided bike-through of
the course, various fun skill drills, and a ton of race tips from folks who
not only know how to race hard but also how to race smart. You don't have to
register in advance for the clinics - or be registered for a race - but you
absolutely need to fill out a waiver.
6) Sponsors, goodies and prizes galore!
We are thrilled to enjoy the continued support of a host of sponsors:
- Hopworks Urban Brewing, Portland's all-organic, bike-centric eco-brewpub
continues to be the title sponsor of the series and every week they will
throw in some much-coveted beer prizes (at least, for racers who are 21 and
over). In addition, the Hopworks Bike Bar (located at 3947 N Williams Ave,
just a couple minutes from PIR) will again offer $2 beers to Short Track
racers who drop by after the races and show them their 2012 race plate (sort
of our secret handshake). The HUB Bike Bar features a great outdoor patio
and Happy Hour from 9 to 11pm.
- Our bike shop sponsor Cyclepath will be at the series each night to
provide free mechanical support.
- The folks at Portland Design Works and Corsa Concepts will be teaming up
each week to provide racers free post-race refreshments, including Dave
Killer's Bread PB&J sandwiches and Hammer Nutrition recovery drink.
- New this year, we will be partnering with Portland wizz-kid start-up
Athletepath to provide result notifications via text and/or email and a
completely revamped series standings system, which will include team
standings. Stay tuned for more details about all that after our first night
of racing.
- Every week - and of course at our Series Grand Finale - we will raffle off
and give away a bunch of great prizes and goodies friendly donated by all
our generous sponsors, including Yakima, Moots, Rubena, Chris King, Nossa
Familia Coffee, Bob's Red Mill, Larabar, Ruckus Components, and the all-new
Lumberyard. Please return the favor and support our sponsors with your
business!
7) Six Hours of Mount Hood: today is last day to enjoy our early-bird
discount.
On Sunday July 1st, we will be heading up the mountain for the third edition
of the Six Hours of Mount Hood. At last year's edition, we enjoyed beautiful
weather and received rave reviews from racers and we'll keep working on
making this the most fun MTB endurance event in Oregon, whether you race
solo or as a two-person team. Look forward to a more detailed update about
this must-do MTB race in a couple weeks, but I already wanted to give a
heads-up that if you register by end of day today, you will enjoy an
additional $5 off the pre-registration rate (otherwise, you can still
pre-register through June 22).

8) Mark your calendars: Sunday August 12 - 2012 Oregon Short Track State
Championships in Cascade Locks.
Per the feedback we received from racers and officials, we made the decision
to move the Short Track State Championships from June 30 (the day before the
Six Hours) to Sunday August 12. And we are super-stoked to host the event at
the all-new riverside easyCLIMB trail system in Cascade Locks. A web flyer
with more details is forthcoming, but for now make sure to mark already the
date, as well as the Family Fun Ride, Campout, and Trail Care Party
Northwest Trail Alliance is hosting at this venue the weekend of June 9-10.

9) Finally... some IMPORTANT safety tips.
On Monday nights between 6pm and 8pm there are ongoing road bike races on
the PIR race track. If you are in a rush to get to the short track course,
please use the wooden bridge, midway across the finish straightaway of the
road track. If you prefer to cross through the main gate (where the road
racers enter), you should at all time obey the directions of the crossing
marshals and use extreme caution when crossing! As a general rule, never
cross the track when oncoming racers are in sight. As a general rule, try to
come early. Less traffic, shorter lines at registration, plenty of time to
pre-ride the course, and all-in-all less stress. The course will be open for
pre-riding from 4pm on and registration will open at 4:30pm. Note: if you
come early and there are still ongoing car or moto races, you MUST use the
bridge to cross the track. Jumping the closed gate while car or moto races
are still ongoing is a big no-no at PIR (they are very serious about their
track safety protocols), so
again: when the gate is locked, just use the bridge. And if you drive over
to PIR, make sure that you don't leave any valuables visibly in your car or
unlocked bikes on your bike racks.
That's it. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to shoot me an e-mail.
Looking forward to seeing you on Monday!
~Kris
