Paved route to Timothy Lake?

Sarah Tisdale

2012-07-17

Someone asked, so here's a bit more info about the Timothy Lake route...

Water/Toilet/Food Summary:
- Note the 5mi "Faraday Rd" detour off Rt224. (stolen from the Brevet route)
- Camgrounds along 224 (water/toilets)
- Mile 25: Ripplebrook Ranger Station (water/toilets snacks 9am-5pm)
- Mile 42: High Rock Viewpoint (no water, no food)
- Mile 61: Clackamas Lake Ranger Station Historic District
(water, toilets are nearby at Clackamas Lake camground)
- Mile 93: Ripplebrook Ranger Station (water/toilets snacks 9am-5pm)
- Camgrounds along 224 (water/toilets)
- Same "Faraday Road" detour off Rt224 on the way back

Basically, bring all your food. Be prepared for long stretches
without water: miles 25-61 (uphill), 61-93 (downhill).

Did you see Susan's earlier reply to this?
My advise is to trust the randonneur, they are generally very
knowledgeable about "off the beaten path" routes.

Every revolutionary idea seems to evoke three stages of reaction...
One, it's completely impossible.
Two, it's possible, but it's not worth doing.
Three, I said it was a good idea all along.

Duh Evan I wasn't reading the question!

If I remember correctly 58 is paved at least until the junction with
5860 (which is unpaved, and the route we went last time).

I don't know about the condition of road 58 between 5860 and 42. 42 is
paved from the intersection of 42&57 near Timothy Lake 'till highway 26.

I've descended 5860 on 25's and didn't pinch flat. But road condition
changes all the time and your mileage may vary.

Hmm, has anyone taken road 46 and then north on 42?

Yabut ... In response to the original poster's question, I don't think there is a 100% paved route. It's always possible they sneaked up there and paved when I wasn't looking but last 3 years in a row I've ridden from Timothy up past High Rocks and turned around at the gravel section. It may be shorter than the low road by the dam, I haven't gone the length of either one - I don't mind gravel on my 25s but I balk at ruts and fist-size rocks. Maybe I should go up on my MTB and see. Maybe you guys that ride through these sections can weigh in on current road conditions so I'll know it's better now?

I've just done some extensive research on this very subject for a 400K
randonneuring route I'm building.

If you want a 99% paved route, you can go via this route. There's a
very short 5 minute (by foot) portage at the 14.5 mile mark. It'll get
you directly to Timothy Lake over 18 miles and 3500 feet or so of
climbing. http://ridewithgps.com/routes/1327082

The other way (100% paved) would be via High Rocks:
http://ridewithgps.com/routes/1252273 At the 28 mile mark on this map,
you would continue on Oregon Skyline Road to NF 57 to the south side of
Timothy Lake. Obviously, it's the long way around and includes an extra
1000 feet of climbing.

Hope this helps.

Subject: [OBRA Chat] Paved route to Timothy Lake?

I'm wondering if there is a 100% paved biking route to take from
Estacada to Timothy Lake via the Clackamas highway. I've looked on
Google Maps and it appears that all except 7 miles of Timothy Lake Rd /
NF 57 is paved. However, some directions from ridewithgps suggests
taking NF 58 - NF 5810 - NF 5820. Is the later option all pavement or
is NF 57 my best bet for avoiding dirt roads?

I'm wondering if there is a 100% paved biking route to take from Estacada to Timothy Lake via the Clackamas highway. I've looked on Google Maps and it appears that all except 7 miles of Timothy Lake Rd / NF 57 is paved. However, some directions from ridewithgps suggests taking NF 58 - NF 5810 - NF 5820. Is the later option all pavement or is NF 57 my best bet for avoiding dirt roads?
