saddle soars......sorry!

Using petrolium based chamois cream can allow bacteria to remain in

your chamois through a very vigorous washing. The petrolium jelly just

doesn't wash all the way out of your chamois...

I put all my cycling clothes in the washing machine using hot water, which

probably shortens the garment life a bit.

But after ten years, I've had no problems with Vaseline or Skin Lube residue

in several brands of shorts. And,

trust me on this, I'm very fussy about what I sit on.

Evan's point is well taken, though. When you wash your shorts, make sure

they're clean.

Evan Kruse

A great way to get rid of saddle sores is to not race anymore, get a camera,

and only ride twice a week for fun....

No, really, the cleanliness issue is a big thing. Antibacterial detergents

are one thing, but so is drying shorts thoroughly is also an important thing

to do. Bacteria like damp areas...

I have cleared up a few serious saddle sores with no auto-surgical

techniques. (I have never opened them) I have used Bactroban Cream. It is a

prescription ointment (Mupirocin Calcium Cream 2% to be exact) that is

applied for 10 days. The full 10 days must be done, even though the sore has

always cleard up in less than five. Since it is a prescription drug, you

will need to talk to your physician.

I, personally, won't ever open a sore unless I can guarantee that it will

stay fairly clean. The one place I think that cleanliness is not guaranteed

is the arse. Also, realizing that you have a saddle sore brewing right away

is a big part of it too. The faster you start to take care of them, the

better. That is why it is good to use chamois cream, like chamois butter or

another non-petrolium-jelly based cream, because if you eliminate chafing as

a possible cause of soreness, then you know that there is a saddle sore

brewing. Using petrolium based chamois cream can allow bacteria to remain in

your chamois through a very vigorous washing. The petrolium jelly just

doesn't wash all the way out of your chamois...

I hope this helps. My experience comes from riding on a tandem with saddle

sores. For you tandem riders out there... you know how much this can hurt!

yes.

and to make your Castelli shorts last longer, ditch your saddle with the

embroidery on it because it's like sand paper. eats right through your nice

deluxe shorts. learned that one the rough way.

Epson Salt in your hot baths to help them come to a head.

Biggest problem to this day is team shorts! All teams in an effort to save

money purchase the equivalent of crap. You get what you pay for! Loose or

stretchy lycra fabric that won't hold your chamois still on your butt will

cause discomfort to any and all.

Each and every time you ride, wash out your shorts, even if it is just a

30 minute ride on your trainer on a rainy Monday afternoon. With respect

to shorts, you get what you pay for. I have been riding with Pearl Izumi

Ultrasensor's for years and have had periodic saddle sore's but since I

spend a pant-load of money on a pair of Castelli (unsure of

spelling)Progetto Y shorts, I have yet to experience a single episode of

saddle soreness.

I have never played a Doctor on TV either but I do play one in real life.

Seth's advice is very similar to the route i took. Stay very clean. Hot

baths. Squeeze those bastards dry. They hurt really bad and stink due to the

infection. After used topical steriod, from my doctor and kept dry and

clean. They seem to go away quickly after squeezing. I used Noxzema on my

pad when riding.

I am not a doctor and I do not play one on TV.

Good Luck and get a saddle that fits or adjust its height.

Seth May

I've suffered from saddle soars for the last 4 years.

I've done a fair amount of reading about them, and

talked with my doctor. Saddle soars are caused by hair

folicals infected by staphylococci. They are known

more widely as furuncles, carbuncles, or boils. I

currently use an perscription anti-baterial wash

(which I can't remember the name of off-hand) that is

used every time I shower. On top of that, use a

anti-baterial detergent when washing you bike clothes.

I also recommend using a chamois cream. Most of these

will have anti-baterial components and provide

lubrication between your chamois and your skill

(helping reduce skin breaks). Also, make sure your

seat fits well. Anything you can do to make you ride a

little softer will help as well (carbon seat posts,

etc).

If you already have saddle soars, there are a few

things you can do to help them heal faster. Hot water

will help them come to a head much faster (read hot

baths). There are also some boil creams on the market

to make this happen as well, though I've never tried

them. Don't put ointments on you soars, as it will

have the opposite effect, trapping the bacteria

against the skin. Generally, don't treat the soar as

you would a pimple. Its not the same thing. If you

want to pop the sucker, don't squeeze (like you would

a zit), pull the skin taunt. I find that after a soar

has come to a head, drained (blood dosen't have

anymore puss in it), that the best way to keep the

soar from returning is to use some anti-bactirial

ointment (polysporine) and a bandaid till the soar has

healed up (about 24-36 hours).

Most saddle soars are pretty small (zit like), but

some are are large (more of what you expect a boil to

be like). The large ones take much more time to come

to a head, are much more painful, and if not properly

taken care of, can lead to problems later on (I've

heard of people needing surgery).

Anyways, advice: keep clean. Shower after riding. Make

sure your shorts are -aways- clean. Use anti-baterial

everything.

During my first year I was battling them constantly. So I had to resort to

rotating saddles. That's not a great way to deal with them, but it kept me

riding. The next thing I used some product which the name escapes me, but

it helped soothe the pain during the ride. Immediately after the ride I

would shower and make sure all that saddle stuff was washed off and the

affected area was Very clean. During the day I would use OXY cleansing pads

on the area. Then at night just before climbing into bed I would apply some

triple antiseptic cream.

What I finally did to fix the problem was to purchase a saddle that seemed

to be a good fit. Once I found the right saddle for me, I haven't had a

single sore since.

Hope that helps.
