All of the Bossen cousins have had helmets on their heads since they first started riding anything with wheels. I have pictures, on a family camping trip, of a group of three, two year-old, boys (Mikkel and two cousins who grew up to be football players) racing on big wheels-- all with helmets on. It has been a "family LAW" that everyone wear helmets and seat belts long before it was a state law.
All of the Bossen Cousins have heard about the six year-old boy who jumped on his new bike to just ride up the sidewalk a little ways. A neighbor backing out of his driveway and ran over the boy. The boy is about 21 now, he is a quadriplegic, unable to speak or use the bathroom. A busy volunteer could easily back out of a parking space into a racer.
The Bossen Cousins are well educated about helmets but I can not say the same for other juniors who do not have the good example and the family group reinforcement they have.
The kids do notice things--the trash another junior threw down, the waterbottles thrown down at the foot of the hill, the commuters without lights. They watch everything and discuss how silly some adults are. They also jump out of the car and pick up trash and waterbottles when we see them.
If you have never had to go through the permit process and jump through all of the hoops necessary to get approval for a race you should try it someday. It gives you a whole new perspective on what is necessary to keep our race venues. These approvals are very dependent on the behavior of the racers on race day. That driver you piss off might be the ODOT representative coming out to see how well the races are run.
I have repeatedly had to ask racers to please get out of the road after they finish their race. Some racers have even been slow to respond even when the approaching car was a police car.
