I am an avid rider and I have had motorists try to run me off the road. In my capacity as a litigation attorney, I know that you do not have to stand for this. If this happens to anyone else, please record the license plate number and give me a call. The law provides ample criminal and civil opportunities to combat this conduct.

Subject: [OBRA Chat] Thompson Road Bike Terrorist
As Thompson Road has become a popular venue for evening hill repeat workouts I thought I would recount my 7:30 Tuesday night experience with a local felon (convicted or not) and advise anyone riding in this area to be careful. This occurred East of Skyline on NW Thompson at the base of the final hill that ends at Skyline.
What I believe was a Jeep CJ5 (brown color with soft top) passed me and came to a sudden stop about fifty feet away. The driver backed up at a steadily increasing speed headed directly towards me. I jumped into the ditch and up onto the embankment. He drove past, then, apparently satisfied I was off the road he drove back up the hill. Thinking he was gone I got back on my bike and continued up the hill. After about 50 yards I realized he had turned around and was coming back down the hill in my lane. I went back up onto the embankment and he went past, turned around, drove up the hill and turned around again so the jeep was pointed down the hill in the uphill lane with headlights on. He shut off the engine, got out and came towards me. By this time I had located several baseball bat sized branches which seemed to encourage him to keep his distance even though he was encouraging me to hit him. Although he was about five feet away I could distinctly smell alcohol. I got out in the road and we backed down the hill. After several minutes two cars came up the road and I asked the first one to call 911 and briefly told her about the situation. Apparently fearing an encounter with the police the guy went back up the hill and got in the jeep. He then backed all the way to the top of the hill in the uphill lane and didn't come back.
I have a description of the vehicle and driver but was unable to get a license number because the plate light was out. I have reported this to the Portland Police and the Multnomah County Sheriff and they say they will get the description to officers that patrol the area. On the chance that someone else has had a confrontation with this maniac and was able to get a plate number please get in touch with me. Last but not least, it is probably a good idea to develop a plan of action, carry a cell phone, pepper spray, or some type of protection to deal with situations like this when riding in solitary areas like Thompson. I think this person commutes this route and was on their way home. - BW
