As has been mentioned, the bottom of Sandy Ridge is plenty fun for the beginners.

I've also been taking my 10 and 4 year olds to the Ventura Park pump track (thanks NWTA!). It's not "real" MTB action, but it's good fun and great skill/fitness building.

Brian,
Lower Hide and Seek is great except the climb up might be bit much. I've
towed two kids with a bungie setup to make it doable...

I've had a great time with even really young kids at Sandy River Delta
(1000 Acres). It is very flat, no gears required, but has some mellow
single track in spots. The best part is that kids get to just explore and
you can visit the Sandy river, throw rocks and picnic.

Second is Powell Butte. It's a little harder to access for kids with the
upper parking lot closed, but approaching from Holgate and climbing up is
OK. The Orchard loop at the top is fantastic with views, a real sense of
accomplishment. Some of the descending and climbing down back is a bit
much, plus nettles.

Hey all,

I've been racking my brains trying to think of someplace close to Portland
that I
can take my son for a good intro to off-road riding. My first thought was
Forest
Park, but really that's mostly just up-n-down. He's only 9 and seems to

I take my 8 year old son to the bottom half of Hide and Seek at Sandy Ridge, its an easy road ride up and then drop into the trail from there. Its smooth and flowy and my son (24" mtb)has a great time there. I suggest going a bit early though to avoid traffic on the trails.

Thanks,
