calibrating a powertap on Garmin 500

I think it won't work unless you're NOT pedaling. But please tell me if
you hear otherwise. I think the idea is to zero it out. You're not really
calibrating, but you're setting the zero point.

I am somewhat dubious of the numbers I got from my first ride with my new PowerTap. I've read a few different ways to calibrate it, but, um, I just don't think I did it right.

Basically, I put the Garmin in calibration mode, held the bike still and spun the pedals backwards so it kept transmitting. The Garmin said "Calibration successful!" and I went and rode.

I've also read to actually pedal the bike while it's calibrating (presumably moving).
