I've been in and seen that situation a few times.

Going up a hill in the Clackamas River Road race, someone touched wheels

and a kid went down. He was so mad that he threw a tantrum. While

thrashing about on the pavement, he kicked out his bike that still attached

to his foot and took down my team mate in the process.

Another time at PIR, I was about #7 in the pace line when the guy in front

faked an attack but actually slowed. The chain reaction of braking caught

me flat footed and I rode right into the rider in front of me burning his

calf with my front tire before I went down hard. About 10 riders piled

into and onto me that time.

At the 1st Cascade Cycling Classic criterium I was working my way to the

front when I hooked wheels in a corner with a guy that did not understand

things like "apex". My front wheel was removed from the bike and when I

sat up I saw about 60 riders coming right at me. Somehow they all got

around O.K.

The moral of this story is that if you don't want to crash, don't get on

your bike.

There those riders who have crashed, and those who will crash. Nobody

rides for free.

Tuck and roll my friend. Make yourself into the smallest target possible and

hope you don't get hit, or have someone try to bunny hop your arm and break

bad enough to need surgery. Most riders should just lay still and wait until

the field goes by you, because yes, it is extremely dangerous to try and get

up right away, because the field is usually splitting around you and any

movement on the crashed riders part endangers other people. It should be

common practice not to jump up on your feet right away.

As for the crash on Sunday, I think the rider involved was just as surprised

as everyone else that he was back up on his feet, and was totally oblivious

to the bike he started swinging around like a baseball bat. And Doug, I know

he was looking for you after the race, so you might want to keep your eye

out for him next week.
