One thing that might allow one to see improvement especially in a race
series is at what mile they were dropped. If you hang on for more miles
than last week, I would see that as an improvement.

I really think that having your goal for the race be to "not get dropped"
or to "get dropped later than last week" is really a poor goal to have. I
think newbie racers should measure their HR and speeds in training and
enter races with goals to DO something in a race, as opposed to just
filling the pack until they get dropped.
