Oh. So many choices. I know this hill well.

For my money* [*free], the funnest route UP from PSU is

12th > Cardinell > Rivington > Buckingham > Davenport > Hawthorne Terr > Ravensview > Greenway > Talbot Terr > "backdoor" footpath up the NW corner of Council Crest. Most grades about 9% or better, great city views, zilch traffic, good clean fun!

Go DOWN Council Crest Dr > Chehalem > Mt Adams > Fairmount > Marquam > 11th > Gaines > 6th > Homestead > Terwilliger. Super fast, no fooling around, avoids Sam Jackson.

Talbot will take you all the way to Council Crest Drive switch-back to your left and take CC Drive to the park if you're so inclined. Otherwise, at Talbot and Fairmont, take Fairmont all the way around Council Crest (two or three miles) and back to Talbot. Repeat. Great workout all kinds of things to sprint for, and it may look flat, but it's only kinda flat.

This is my favorite route up, then down via Montgomery. And, you get to go past Piggot's Castle on this route!

I agree about Montgomery I lived at the bottom of it for about twenty-five years and rode it regularly. I'd not go up Greenway, though. Take a left at Montgomery and Patton and instead of turning on Greenway, take Talbot road (narrow but slightly less grade and no traffic) just to the right of Greenway at Patton. Agreed that Montgomery/Greenway (or Talbot) is usually is nicer than your planned OHSU route, but Montgomery is still in the process of being ripped up and put back together as of this morning. And, anyway, that route is a little ... sedate.

Sam Jackson sucks for many reasons and has little to redeem it other than being continuously steep near the top (actually, it's become SW Marquam by then) and proximate to good medical care.

If you're heading that direction it's more fun, I think, to blast up Terwilliger and catch the Ronde route: right on Westwood, first right on Menefee, then sneaky 'dead end' right on Northwood and enjoy the tremendous views after the 150 meters or so of path riding (fine for road tires). Catch Hessler on your left to Mitchell (you can follow the faded yellow lions for most of this) and on up to Fairview. Summit Council Crest wherever, then plunge down the Broadway rollercoaster.

Good times.

Wil

You could also go up Montgomery, cross Patton and take Greenway up there. That's a nice route.

One more suggestion, go Terwilliger to Westwood to Fairmont that no one has
brought up. It is the "long" way for sure.

Join the lawyer ride that starts at pioneer place. I think Monday's they do that Montgomery route with some fast pushes around the top. They don't quite top out on council but add a nice second climb by the zoo. I think the leave right at 12:15?
It will at least acquaint you with the route.
