Having lost a very expensive camera when it popped out of my bento box
without me noticing (duh) while riding some Belgian cobbles, I would
recommend that you take a photo of your contact information ("If found,
please return to" with name & phone number is enough, or with an address
if you travel a lot) and make it the first photo image on both your
smartphone and/or the memory card on your camera. While it won't
guarantee you'll get your item back, it certainly can't hurt to have it
there. I lost my camera several days into an amazing cycling vacation,
and wish I'd thought of this before I lost *my* camera.
