Mildew-y Shoes

I appreciate it. Funny, because that's exactly the cleaning method I used.
Of course, it was after it was too late. I did garden hose them down right
after last week's Blind Date, but I just didn't do the rest of what was
needed. I'm going to try a few things tonight to see if I can resolve this.

That is a good point Steve. Cleaning / drying shoe is one task, if mildew
and or fungus "is in the shoe", nasty chemicals are probably needed. Not an
expert on that. For cleaning, I personally believe that a garden hose and
spray nozzle and dawn detergent if the inside of the shoe got extremely
muddy are super efficient. Water is your friend here. Be sure insoles are
removed and cleaned very well! FLUSH - FLUSH - FLUSH until the water runs
clean. Set on end toes up for 10-30 minutes, then take them someplace where
you can open the tongues well and let the good old box fan run on them
overnight (or boot dryer). I have yet to have my shoes become home to alien
life forms that cause smells or other non happy body interactions.
As some in the medical profession might chime in with more specific
knowledge..................FUNGUS is one nasty, tough cookie to deal with.
It is a pretty unique life form that has been around much longer than us
humans..........thus not so easy make vanish from ones existence if it sets
up shop.....wherever it finds cozy.
Good luck.

It doesn't help get rid of the mildew that's already in the shoes, but I've
been using a boot dryer for my wet road/commuter shoes for years and have
never had trouble with funky odors in the shoes:

You could also try a couple of "fumigations" with Lysol (a mildewcide). Hose the inside of shoes and let them air dry. You could also try spraying with Lysol and then sealing in a big ziploc for about 12 hrs.

Also: Invest in a shoe dryer. There are several brands. Last year I broke down and bought one at Fred Meyer. It was about $30 and worth every penny. Even soggy shoes and fully waterlogged Sidi Diablos dry overnight.

Good luck!

I've had great results freezing mine. Clean em' first of course take
the insoles out or anything else that can be taken off and freeze em for
a week. It's totally worked for me.

If there's not enough room in the
freezer don't forget the dry ice option. It is usually available
from ice cream distributors or welding gas suppliers.

And at around 100F degrees below zero it's way colder than your
freezer.

I’m going to try this for sure. Seems easy enough. The Tea
Tree oil thing seems promising. I had not even thought of
that. Plus it can’t smell any stronger than embrocation at a
starting line right?

Somebody mentioned “Bac-Out” too. I’m going to check that out.

Thanks for the tips, all. Now to find room in the freezer for
size 46 shoes.

If it's too late for advice on how to dry your shoes, I've had good luck
using a spray kitchen cleaner that has bleach in it to de-stink them. Take
out the insoles, put them and the shoes in the kitchen sink and spray the
insoles and the insides of the shoes with the cleaner. LEAVE IT ON FOR ONLY
A MINUTE OR SO, to avoid damaging the shoes., then flood the shoes and
insoles with water to rinse well. Then dry them promptly, first with a
towel and then preferably with heated air (putting them over a forced-air
floor vent can work well, with a vented box to keep the heat in). This
works pretty well on stinky shoes, though I've never had to test it on
mildew.

Yeah. What I did was spray them off, and then just left them in the garage.
Usually, I bring them in, stuff them with newspaper and leave them by the
heater vent. But the weather has been so mild, the heater isn¹t on. And the
last time I raced was at night, so I just wandered into the house after
cleaning up and passed out. Didn¹t think about them again until a couple
days later and it was too late. I washed them thoroughly with soap and hot
water and dried them, but the smell lives on.
