Team Tactics

David Johnson

As for Piece of Cake, Broadmark takes the cake in last years race. They had

a guy off from the start, and had every single move marked (by more than one

rider) and ended up finishing 1-2 in the mens cat.1-2 race. At one point in

the race I was off the front with three, maybe four broadmark guys and just

me (Logie Velo). At that point I knew I wasn't going to take the

win....thats racing. Also, we ended up getting caught by a small group, and

I didn't work a bit...Auker wasn't too happy about it...but after several

laps OTF, one broadmark guy up the front and 3 broadmark guys sitting on the

back of the chase group, I wasn't feeling too keen on pulling through.....

As for tactics in general, logie velo (yes, we have tons of results this

year (sarcasm)!) has in the past split races up. If we have six riders, two

guys will watch the first 3rd of the race, 2 guys the middle 3rd, and the

two guys who are riding well will be set for the last third.....if you are

one of the "protected" riders, that doesn't mean you have an easy ride for

most of the race, you have to watch out for strong moves early in the race.

If you want to forget about tactics all together....you can always try a

move from the gun, I like this for two reasons. A-if you pull off a win, its

cool. B-it gives your teammates a reason to sit on the back of any move

going up the road. The worst is when (if) a move comes up to you without a

teammate in it.....ok, thats all. Remember, PIR is a good place to practice

tactics and leadouts as its a training race. Nothing is cooler than a proper

leadout from a few k-out that work!

Hello Pat and others:

The EWEB Windpower Cycling Team will be putting on a free demonstration of

team tactics at their finest (just like we did last year) at the upcoming

Piece of Cake Road Race which as we all know occurs this Sunday.

See y'all there!

Err, umm, to our shame, that's not entirely true. One Eugene Celebration a

few years ago, Team O did exactly that in the 3/4/5 road race on Sunday. It

wasn't planned, we saw a Team O jersey up the road solo, and we all just

lined up shoulder to shoulder. The blockade lasted all of about 300 meters,

and completely fell apart as soon as the road departed from dead flat. The

solo escape managed half a lap or so, but he didn't know that we were trying

to slow the chase for him, or he probably would have stayed away longer.

In retrospect, it was a ridiculous tactic, but we (the Team O 3/4/5s in that

race) didn't know better at the time.

I encourage anyone in the greater Portland area who is interested in

learning more about racing as a member of a team to check out Team Oregon.

Contrary to one comment earlier in the "blocking" string of emails, Team O

does not race by sending one guy off the front and then mass 10 guys left to

right across the road to prevent a chase. If we happen to get someone in a

move off the front, then the pressure is off of us - go ahead and chase it.

As a team, it should be our job to tag along on that chase and then counter

if the move is caught. It's also our responsiblity to chase if we've missed

the move (and we're concerned about it - some moves are guaranteed to come

back without much of a chase).

Team Oregon is a developmental team. We try and develop racers of all

abilities and at all age levels, from juniors to masters.

Take a look at some of the race results and you'll see Team Oregon folks

peppered throughout. And if there is any question that Team O knows how to

race, check out the Cat. 3 BB results.

That depends. there are very few teams out there, at least at a local

level

that have a no. 1 guy that everyone works for or that type of game plan

that i heard about. That is not to say that once a race unfolds that team

tactics don't help a team member(s).

For instance, if during a race there is a break and I have a team mate

in

the break, I, and the rest of my team, will not help you catch him. However

we will gladly tag along if you do catch him(them). And when you do catch

him, more than likely one of my fresher teammates or myself will jump again

and try another break. Have fun chasing him or me down again.

Or if one of my guys are not in the break, we will work together to

track

that break down, while keeping one or two guys fresh for that secondary

"re-grouping" break.

There are usually a couple of guys who are more astute in the race and

yes

they do "guide" their teammates during the race.

Just a few examples of "team tactics".

I'd like to know more about team tactics. What I am wondering about,

on a lot of these races, is what do the "teams" talk about before a

race? Is there any communication or specific assignments handed out?

Are there team leaders who rally their teams to respond to changing

conditions? I can't speak for anything above a Cat 3 race, but it

seems that the definition of a

team is the group of guys with the same jersey on. Are 'real' race tactics

beyond the scope of many teams?
