I have to admit....If I want a very tough /brutal for an old man cyclocross workout and do not care about how filthy my bike gets......I leave home by UP, cross the Broadway bridge, up through the Thurman Gate....Lief Erikson all the way to Saltzman, up to Skyline, Skyline to Springville, Springville down to St. Johns Bridge, across and back home. Did I say this was hard for an old man? Honestly....The best thing about Lief is if you ride it at a good clip, the differing surfaces are very good technical tests...especially if wet. But the loose gravel in some sections are good anytime. Oh yeah.....and the NWTA call out is a good idea as well.

Powell Butte and Forest Park. I enjoy riding singletrack on the Cross bike for skill practice.
Sign up to be a member of NWTA (only $30 for a year and you get a subscription to a magazine of your choice) and help to make these places even better for Cross bikes. The more members they have the more likely that they will continue to see more trail improvements for cyclists. Numbers matter tremendously when dealing with local government, especially when resources are spread so thin.

I was just reliving past Crusade courses yesterday at Barton - and Jackson Middle school was super fun unfortunately I think public urination ruined that venue for us...

I loved that course. The first year I rode it there was a Belgian pro (former world champ?) in attendance. It was awesome to see him ride that course. I also remember trying every lap to ride the run-up and Brian Witty holding a "best ride up high mark" pole for riders to shoot for every time. Never made it, but I got closer every time and the crowd on the hill was incredible. Good memories.
But if I recall, the grass was destroyed there if it was at all muddy.

For a cross venue I would love to see Jackson Middle School in SW Portland get used again. This was my first cross race ever (2003?) and I thought it was an amazing course. Big run up, big downhill, lot's of off camber. The entire school is in a giant bowl so you can watch most of the race from the center of the field.
This used to be a crusade race so Brad will be a good resource for course setup and/or why the venue went away. I could see parking being an issue with the current crusade #'s.

So what's everyone's favorite place to do a few hot laps? What ami missing from the list and are there any (former) race venues open to the ride during the week? Just bored of the same few parks along my commute.
Mt. Tabor(bikes not allowe on trails anymore?)
Gabriel park
Pier park
Fernhill park?
I-205 "homeless encampment"
Overlook park
Also if one was interested in promoting a race next year, anyone have any venue suggestions not already taken or currently unused? Something like rainier with a big open course and some elevation? Racking my brain here...
