Digging road with mountain?

Shimano's 9spd road shifter is the R440 but you can use any Shimano or
compatible 9spd MTB shifter since they use the same cable pull. The only issue
is that all of these will be triple front shifters and you have a double. Your
other option is go old school with thumb shifters, either IRD or bar end mounted
on Paul Thumbies. BTW SRAM has really nice flat bar road shifters for their 1:1
derailleurs.

So I'm more of a sram guy. But I have an older 2x9 speed ultegra front and rear
derailleurs...what flat bar shifters do I need to complete a commuter that I'm
building for my wife?

Thanks

It depends on your setup. The older 9 speed Shimano MTB derailleurs will work
with 10 speed road shifters and cassettes but the new DynaSys 10 speed MTB stuff
has a unique cable pull that is incompatible with everything else.

BTW Shimano does make the R770 10 speed flat bar road shifters which are
Ultegra grade with a road compatible cable pull.

I am doing the opposite, running a mountain rear derailleur with my road
shifters. I used to have a DA 10sp, but wanted 11-34 gears, so I had to change
to a mountain shadow long cage(cant remember the model). Did not have to change
my shifters at all.
Cheers.

I actually don't think you can use a 10 speed shimano mountain shifter on a road

a completely different actuation ratio than the road stuff. I've never played
with it, so maybe that's just marketing. The DA 10 speed bar end + thumbie
shifter mount trick will work (and IRD has a cheaper variant on those, too).
Also, Shimano does make a 10 speed flat bar shifter for road at the Tiagra
level. _______________________________________________ OBRA mailing list

Not flat bar related, but 10 spd.
For the Ronde de Portlandia, I used my cross bike with retro shifters (dura ace level bar end equiv.), put a mountain cassette and XT 9 spd rear der. Worked like butter!

How does one shift DA 10 speed on a flat bar? Bonus points for less expensive.
