I've ridden parts of the horse trail around three creek and it is super
sandy and soft from horse travel. There was a paralleling jeep trail that I
rode on instead. Gorgeous and fun exploring though.

Metolius - Windigo, something Ive been thinking about doing...

I think there's a route around the small bit of wilderness at Cultus, if I
recall... And when you're up around Broken Top, there's options to cut
over towards Bend and eventually Paulina Peak...

Could be a fun marathon ride...

Unless you just want to do single track, get forest service maps (in this
day and age fire district maps are best next to section maps). Look at
either a loop or a starting / end point and go ride. Many local churches
and or the Forest Service will let you park you car in their lots no charge.
There are so many amazing primitive roads (many closed to motor vehicles)
out there that not only take you places, they are every bit as much fun to
ride as single track. I have NEVER worked as hard as touring (unsupported)
on these types of roads on mountain bike. When you and your bike weigh a s_
_ t pot load, climbing hills are another world and descents make you learn
how to control a bike. It is not what mountain biking has become where you
just run over things...and if that does not work...you get a bike with more
suspension and then run over bigger things.
just my two cents.

I am hoping to do a self supported 100 mile MTB ride next summer and am
looking for places to go within 3 hour drive of Portland. I am considering
doing the same course as the Cascade 100 but thought something more original
might be fun. Any ideas?

Consider doing the Capitol Forest 100 mile MTB course. It's two 50 mile
loops. That gives you the opportunity to "stage" additional support at the
50 mile mark. For example, food, water, parts/pieces, etc. It's an
excellent course, almost all single track. Great mix of stuff, and a good
hard effort with around 12,000 of gain. All 100% ridable single track.

Here's the 2012 race website, including course maps:
http://www.nwepicseries.com/events/8-24-13-capitol-forest-50mile-100mile
...which also includes a link to .gpx files which you can import to a GPS
...
