Re: Fwd: [teamsunnysidesports] please read and do surveyabout USAC and Echo

Not correct! In the world of USAC, one-day licenses are ONLY good for Cat 5
men and Cat 4 women! (USAC Rule 1C11 for 2012, 2103 rule book not out yet).

Did you guys see this? Effing Echo Red 2 Red is considering becoming a USA
cycling event....they put out the survey below.

I just sent an email to Kenji and Mike Ripley - they really didn't present
a fair case - here were my thoughts below ...take the survey if you have
time! Forward to link to everyone you know...

Wade received the email below from Echo about OBRA vs. USAC. I'm pretty
amazed that they'd consider doing this, but I'm even more amazed that he'd
present the "case" of OBRA vs. USAC so unfairly. He states that if you're
a Cat 2 or 3 rider, you don't have to buy a $60 annual USAC license, but he
neglects to say that you do have to pay a $10 one-day fee, which is of
course 50% of an annual OBRA license! He also neglects to be clear that if
you do NOT buy a USAC annual license, "such riders do not become members and
may not enter

Thanks for the support Ron. We'll be talking to the Echo folks to find out
what is going on.

If you race road and mountain bike with USA Cycling then your license is
$90.
$60 road + $30 MTB add on.

Unfortunately, USA Cycling will not dual sanction events.

The fact that you can go to the OBRA meeting and vote for the categories
that affect you is reason enough to support OBRA. You have a voice in your
racing. Category changes require a vote from teams at the annual meeting,
so show up and make your voice known. With USAC, just pay more money and
race the categories they make for you.

Thanks for posting this David. I told them THEY should have posted it to OBRA instead of just the people on their past racer list.

Except for the start and finish road sections of Echo, it is fun to race the single track. But for me, I will NOT race it if they go USA Cycling. I do not even care if they go dual. I will not pay any extra to do this race. I will have already paid extra for the travel to get there. I say if they want to go USA Cycling, let them go. They are the ones that make that choice. Yes we can tell them what we think (trust me...I have), but in the end they decide and if they are viewing their race (and all the success they have had in the OBRA world) as a bigger deal and or more important than it really is (it is just one mtb race and nothing more).....let them enter the world of USA Cycling and watch their participation probably numbers fall. Maybe I am wrong, but I know what I think of USA Cycling and their focus on the elite riders or just riders who have that potential does next to nothing to actually grow the sport. The rest of the non elite are just income fodder.

Everyone,
I am glad to see this survey, I had comented on their facebook site already but I think we should all do both. I think this is a very important issue. I indicated my preference for Obra but also dual sanctioning. I think that might help set a precedent that could be beneficial in other areas of obra cycling.
But most imortantly I hope we all do the survey and comment on their facebook site, It sure would be a loss for Oregon racing if they went to USAC only.

Kenji,

Wade received the email below from Echo about OBRA vs. USAC. I'm pretty amazed that they'd consider doing this, but I'm even more amazed that he'd present the "case" of OBRA vs. USAC so unfairly. He states that if you're a Cat 2 or 3 rider, you don't have to buy a $60 annual USAC license, but he neglects to say that you do have to pay a $10 one-day fee, which is of course 50% of an annual OBRA license! He also neglects to be clear that if you do NOT buy a USAC annual license, "such riders do not become members and may not enter championship events." I know USA Triathlon has a provision that allows you to buy a one-day license then if you do qualify for a national event, you can buy an annual license post-event and still go to the national race. I don't know if USAC has a similar rule...couldn't find anything about that on the USAC site. And then there's this note on the USA cycling license page:

"For MTB races sanctioned by USA Cycling, category 3 and 2 riders are not required to have an annual license to compete in non-Championship events. However they will be required to sign a waiver and may be charged a larger entry fee by the organizer than for an annual member."

Plus, a rider's results will not include a club/team name unless your club pays $150 to be registered with USAC!

The other thing about this message is this race promoter suggests that if they go USA cycling, riders will have medical coverage for the event (also pointing out that OBRA doesn't cover rider injury). He then says "especially good if you do not have insurance." Are you kidding me? This is irresponsible race promotion...side note that I don't think anyone that can't afford medical insurance should be racing bikes anyway...but come on!

This really just fuels the fire with USA Cycling. I'm assuming that USAC went to the Echo folks (big assumption) to become a regional state championship race and chose it because it really is the first mountain bike race of the season. No one in Oregon is in prime race shape in early March...it doesn't even make sense to have a regional state championship in March!

Wade and I both took his "survey" and neither one of us will even think about doing Echo if they decide to go USA Cycling, but is there any way that you or Mike could get the RD to present the options more fairly?
