Going to disc brakes for cross??

I respectfully disagree. For marginal traction conditions with a limited
contact patch modulation matters most.

In fact, for MTB I delayed going to disc brakes for several years until
I could afford good hydraulics - the modulation was so poor on the
mechanicals my preferences (for aggressive and well modulated braking)
could not be satisfied.
I see no reason CX is any different, actually I would argue good
modulation is even more important than on a MTB.

One, it's completely impossible.
Two, it's possible, but it's not worth doing.
Three, I said it was a good idea all along.

That's actually a great point, and another reason I stayed with canti. I don't mtb. If I did, I probably go disc.

With Ridley's 135 rear spacing any 29er disc wheelset will work too!! FYI. Not bike/CX specific only.

I’m in a tough situation because I’m ready for a new cross bike next season, but I’m having a hell of a hard time pulling the trigger. I’m already invested in some wheels that are rim brake tubs (nothing crazy, but money is money). I’m reluctant to buy a canti only bike because it seems like the market is now moving rapidly to disc. Is anybody else going through the same quandry? I’m really wanting to purchase a locally built bike, but I’m having a hard time wanting to drop that much cash for a new ride and a couple sets of wheels. Am I over-thinking the whole thing?

Unless you do something really stupid to your disc bike (or someone else does) it will last longer than your life and probably need 1/2 the maint. of one with rim brakes. Disc brakes on bikes are probably the most efficient bike innovation since the freewheel.
I raced disc my first year of cross and then again last year and NEVER thought about what the brakes might or might not provide. They were consistent at all times. Mechanical are the easiest to work with. They can be repaired and adjusted easier than your rim brakes. Even though the industry is going to push hydraulic big time, all you want to do is slow yourself down and or stop. Modulation is not that important in cyclocross. Bombing down a mountain in a XC or DH race, modulation is sweet.
The weight of disc is not really an issue. You can build a very light disc. race bike if you choose to put $ into it.
I love my steel Kesho.
just my opinion.

I am making the plunge tomorrow. I've decided to go with the Ridley X-Fire disc from Cyclepath. Makes sense, great winter commuter. I'm a Clyde, I need all the brakes I can get. That being said a great pair of TRP V-brakes are a good option for the canti bikes. Disc brakes and your investment in wheelsets will last a lifetime now. Think about it. There's a reason carbon tubies are for sale every year after a year or two of use!
