Joe Zauner
I’d like to see a co-ed division where the first woman across the line gets $1000 and the first man gets a set of steak knives. Call it the Glengary/Glen Ross division.
Purely speculating, but I would guess the ratio of competitive male cyclists to equally competitive female cyclists is about 5-to-1 and thus it might make sense to have six-member teams. A team of five men and one woman seems the obvious choice, but what if a 5-to-1’s lone female member comes up sick? Or crashes? Or gets a flat? Maybe 4-to-2 works better for some clubs. Or 3-to-3. That way a team doesn’t place all its chips on one rider.
I’ve thought about this before but with juniors and seniors (seniors and masters also works) wherein only juniors are awarded places. It might seem analogous to a derny race in that a talented team could theoretically drag a less than talented rider to a high placing, but it’s more complicated since the onus is on on-the-road team marshaling or teamwork. It’s not analogous to Frank O’Harris carrying a football for a touchdown where the men are Frank O’Harris and the women and/or juniors are footballs because in the end the football would have to get itself across the line.
Too bad there’s no such division. Maybe the Dan Blocker Memorial Gentleman’s Ride will have a co-ed division.
But I hear that ride is only a rumor.
