So I'm finally making the jump to carbon tubular wheels. Which means I have a few questions.
1. Brake pads. I've heard to use the pads that the manufacturer recommends, but I've got a Blackwell Research that is now out of business. Swiss stops are out of my broke price range, but what about the Koolstop carbon pads?
2. How to put on a tubular tire and how to take one off? Sure I can check out youtube, but I don't want to follow some idiots instructions. Anyone have a good link on how to glue a tire. Also glue vs tape...what's the difference? And also, how (or can you) do you take off a glued tire to reglue it on. The used wheel that I bought has a good tire on it but the glue looks pretty old and looks like it should be reglued.
3. Tire choices...I know we just went through this with aluminum clinchers, but what about carbon tubulars? Right now it is for a front TT wheel that will only see about 150 miles a year. For Alumnium clinchers for racing, road, crit and TT, I prefer 4000s's. I like conti's and would like to stick with them but I'm open to trying Vittorias. So my question is tire recommendation for TT and recommendation for crit and road (I plan on getting another tubular wheelset later on.) Also 19 or 22mm...considering that I only weigh 130lbs...I know...don't laugh.
4. PSI...I know you can run a lot higher for road, and a lot lower for cx. But for road I run around 105-110psi with 23c clinchers, maybe a little higher or lower depending on the road conditions...but what about tubulars?
Oh yea, gluing a wheel is new to me but I do all my own bike work and I know I can learn how very easily. In 9 years no mechanic has ever touched any of my bikes...no offence to you mechanics out there.
Thanks,
Stewart
