Well. It sounds like you need to have more crank arms to use all the pedal
recommendations.
I have had excellent experience with Time. Never needed to do anything
other than ride and spray off.
I do think the Shimano pedals are smooth to use as well. Time just seemed
to be better for me.
I have never used Crank Bros. pedals so do not speak bad or good for them.
If you consider all the miles that have been ridden by the three main brands
of pedals that people have advocated here......I would tend to believe that
Crank Bros. have the history of more maint. required, but people still love
them just like the Shimano and Time.
Look also has a newer pedal out (maybe 3-4 years now). I tried the first
generation and it had problems. They have rectified those problems as per
their marketing.

I got my first set of SPD pedals in 1995 I think. I still have them on one of my bikes and have never done any maintainence on them. SPD is the way to go.
