Wahoo fitness: anyone used it?

Dan Anderson

Wow, it's possible, but that stuff is expensive.  I have a Galaxy S2 and I use My Tracks for recording my rides.  I get 5 hours out of a battery, and I carry a small spare battery with me, which I got on eBay for $5.

Yes there are USB power devices for dyno hub!

Haven't used it, but it looks handy. There are also phone chargers
that work off of AA batteries for a cheaper option.

I have a small solar cell that has USB output.  Made by IceTech.  Coupled with my Garmin's 12 hour battery life, it will power my unit indefinitely. There is also a USB output generator:

It seems some tech engineer would be able to develop a system that allowed for the bicycle to generate the power needed for the much needed units you folks are using. They do the hub for lighting. Why not to power these devices? Why not some system to tap into the Electronic shifting power pack. The idea of going for a ride and being limited by battery life (especially if young, strong and able to conquer the world) would be a bummer. It would seem that power source flexibility would hold the whole the whole ride together.
Think about it man. New information has come to light! It seems if this has not been done, there is after market opportunity.

Using the Ant+or BT sensors you can still get 3-4 hours with the Iphone 4S-5, as long as you don't slide over to the Map screen. Downloading map data simultaneously really drains the battery. I'd also turn off data roaming, push notifications, and LTE, if you want to extend battery life. You'll still get texts, emails, and voicemails. I have the wahoo Bluetooth HR strap, Bluetooth speed cadence, and the Wahoo RFLKT just arrived last week. I am really enjoying everything. I record my rides and runs with the Wahoo app which provides more info than just the Strava app, which is what I had been using until last month to record rides on my iPhone. The Wahoo app is free, too. After the workout I upload the work out data while still in the Wahoo app to my Strava and Garmin accounts. I have kept a fairly accurate history on Garmin and so I like to continue to log data there. Strava is great for other reasons which many of us are already familiar.

I was so pleased with the Wahoo/iPhone pairing that I sold all of my Garmin devices. I am not sorry I did. I am really liking the RFLKT as it allows me to see the data on my phone with out having to mount my phone on the handlebar or pull it out of my jersey or jacket pocket. I just remembered that I didn't do those long rides with the Bluetooth accessories. It was only using Strava. The longest with the Bluetooth stuff so far this year is 3.5 hours with battery life to spare but I don't recall how much. I don't remember being worried about it though.

I have done 6 hour rides on my iPhone without a battery extender. I have also used a Mophie Juice plus for longer rides (12 hours of use). That was with music playing. I have an iPhone 5. I think that is more than a short training ride. I know that friends have older phones are only getting a couple hours, so YMMV.

My biggest issue with all the smart phone apps is the battery life of my smart phone.   My normal training rides extend well beyond the battery life of my smart phone. (android)  My Garmin Edge 305 gives my routing, cadence, speed, heart rate, total ascent, gradient, time of day, and a whole slew of other data.........and its battery lasts in excess of 12 hours.  I have two........  24 operation, and with a support car charging the off bike unit, 24 hour operation for as many days as I can keep the pedals turning.

If you just do short training rides you should be fine.

I can also control music or the podcast I am listening to with the RFLKT. More info here: http://www.wahoofitness.com/RFLKT/

So the connectivity geek in me likes the whole Wahoo fitness/cadence speedometer/heart rate pieces connected via bluetooth to an iPhone. Anybody have one they'd like to share their experiences with? I'm real curious to hear it.

Thanks!
