State of Track Racing

Agreed. Take for instance Trexlertown. On a Friday night they charge admission to watch races. And it sells out. Granted, it's a lot smaller than the Portland area by a long shot, but I'm shocked how many people that live here that don't know that we have a velodrome.
And things aren't going to get better til there is money behind it, and most companies are spending money where they get an immediate ROI.

I'm not sure it's that simple. Wrestling is really big in Iran, the Eastern European countries, etc. From what I have heard about wrestling, it went down because of lack of political power of wrestling governing bodies, and arcane rules. I think you're probably right; i would just like to see track getting more interest in the U.S.

I don't see track cycling being eliminated. Track cycling is huge in Europe. When Kevin Mansker was in Scotland the crowds were huge and loud. And if you watch the 6 day videos from Rotterdam, it's like a rock concert.

Thanks, Norene, for your informed comments. I guess my biggest concern is that track racing will go the way of wrestling, being removed from the Olympics due to lack of advocacy and support from National and International governing bodies.

I have a tongue-in-cheek solution in the U.S., at least. Let Tom Weisel off the hook for his involvement with Tailwind Sports, in exchange for generous financial support of U.S. bicycle Track racing efforts.

I think, Steve, that there is a greater risk of ALL cycling being
removed
from the Olympics due to the current state of doping in the sport.
Especially
if it turns out that Verbruggen and McQuaid aided and abetted in any
cover-up
whatsoever.
