Re: Maui Bikes

I have been to Maui three years. We have ridden almost everywhere on-road
(no MTBing).

As a counterpoint, several of us had a good experience with South Maui
Cycles in Kihei. We had a group of ~6 and worked a bulk deal. They had a
range of bikes - some alloy, some carbon.

Another year, we had a less positive experience with "Island Biker" in
Kahului. One of our riders got a bike with bad rear wheel bearings and
they couldn't/wouldn't swap it out until we really made a fuss. I think a
direct quote was, "What, do you think we just have extra wheels lying
around here?" Um... well, it is a BIKE SHOP!

I would recommend renting if you're comfortable bringing your own saddle
and setting your position correctly. Less bike maintenance to worry about
on vacation. Less fuss in the airport. Same cost (in my experience).

Maui Rides:

- West Maui Loop (both directions are nice, but clockwise is better)

- Haleakela (from Paia or start in Makawao to shorten it up some)

- East Maui Loop - two day trip
- Do it counter-clockwise
- Stay overnight in Hana (Joe's Hostel is cheap)
- Bad pavement / Dirt road on the first day
- Some of the quietest and most scenic roads
- Almost no services on day 1

- Waipoli Rd (steepest climb on Maui?)
http://connect.garmin.com/activity/149584044

- Iao Needle (shorter ride)
http://connect.garmin.com/activity/148558554

- Pretty hills above Makawao (Could be a hard ride. We took it easy)

- Wailea / Lava Fields (shorter recovery ride)

l'd avoid using South Maui Bicycles in Kihei. Both myself and another OBRA member have had less than good service there. Bring your own bike if it's even close on price. Bring some stout tires as the shoulders are not swept and pavement is not always optimal. Beware of thousands of tourists reading maps and texting in rental cars. It can be fun riding there, but I find on all the islands, you need an extra level of vigilance compared to riding here.
