bike route in NW Portland

I believe that Holman Lane is one way only (uphill from Raleigh to NW 53rd). It also seems to hold moisture longer than anything else in Forest Park, and it's a greasy type of mud. So I'd recommend not coming down it from NW 53rd.

Firelane 1 is a blast - if you were routinely coming down from Cornell/Skyline into downtown on a cross bike, that's the way I'd go every single time. Either FL1 to Leif, or FL1 all the way down to 30.

I take the 26 multi-use trail route via Barnes road and over the bridge at
the Sunset Transit center. Then I come down behind the zoo and get spit out
by Jeld-Wen field. It¹s pretty low traffic, and goes quick. But I see plenty
of people use Cornell to commute every day. It¹s pretty sketchy if you ask
me, but I have kids and stuff, so my fear-meter is different than others.

I don¹t know where you are exactly, but there a bunch of options if you
don¹t mind climbing. Stay northwest of Cornell via Skyline and pick your
poison of roads down to highway 30 (Germantown, Newberry, Logie). Saltzman
is fine, even on a road bike. I mean if you don¹t mind your bike getting
dirty and stuff. It¹s not paved, but it¹s smoothish gravel. If it¹s raining,
you will get very dirty. But who cares? Saltzman is like the greatest thing
ever. No traffic; beautiful birds and shit; all kind of trees. It¹s like a
little slice of heaven. You could also take Old Springville down to Leif
Erikson. It¹s steep to climb back up that way, but I¹ve done it on slick
23¹s before. I think I did have to walk the tail end of Springville though.
But it¹s fine on a cross bike. So if you have a bigger tire, you should be
OK.

Jimmy -

I go from Cedar Mill to the airpor and I try to avoid traffic as much as possible. Cornell down to town is good in the morning as long as I get to Cornell and Skyline by 6:10 or, preferably, earlier.

The next option down is Burnside as long as I hit that before 6:50 or so. I can usually slot myself in traffic so that the car in front is relatively far and also the car in back. It's one fast ride down, so going the speed of traffic is easy.

Later than that, I ride Fairview.

Coming home, I either take Fairview or ride up to Pittock and then up Barnes to Skyline. A little longer, but so worth it for the lack of traffic. I don't understand why one would choose Cornell during rush hour(s) traffic instead of the quiet roads over the hill. Holman will also be a good option on the cross bike.

Bikes are allowed on Holman ONLY for uphill traffic, so you can use it
going West on the way home but not inbound.

Alternates for inbound are Firelanes 1 and 3, or Saltzman. Or you can take
the multi-use path along 26 and drop down from the Zoo on Kingston or
Fairview.

Hi all,

I’ve moved west of the hills and am now trying to figure out my new bike route back to the east side.  Sorry if this question comes off stupid but I honestly don’t know…  is it ok to ride on Holman Lane from NW 53rd Drive to NW Raleigh Street or is this for walking and hiking only?  I’m trying to find a cut-through so that I don’t need to get on NW Cornell at all.

Thank you!
