Poison Oak

What Erik said, only I add lathering up with a preemptive Tecnu barrier for my legs and arms before riding in known hotspots like Syncline. And obviously minimize exposure to start.

Then shower like you mean it afterwards; not hot water and lotta Tecnu. If you wait too long the window of opportunity will close and you're in for the itch.

Keep a grip of Tecnu in the car. It's worth it.

Whatever you do, never take a bath. The oil floats on the surface of the
water, so when you stand up, wala! your entire bidy gets covered in it.
Learned the hard way back in the 70's and have never forgotten.

I get poisen oak a lot, mosr recently at barton park last cx season.

Technu has multiple products. The one meant for prevention and the one
meant to wash off the oil are not useful at this point. You could use the
the one meant for treating the already-formed rash. That one mainly helps
with itching and also dries the skin, which is necessary before healing can
happen.

If you are getting new patches of rash days after exposure, then you are
getting it from dirty clothes. Wash and add white vinegar to the machine.

Trick that works for me is using strong (spf ~50) waterproof/sweatproof sunscreen on all exposed body parts PRIOR to exposure to poison oak/ivy. Then shower with any strong detergent and cool water (to prevent pore opening) as soon as possible. I use NO-AD because it is cheap, but all of them seem to work.
Never had outbreak using this plan and helps with sunburns too!
Ounce of prevention is worth...

My experience is that Technu and other pricey remedies only work if you wash off within 60min or so. Seconding the "Mean Green" cleanser as a more affordable alternative (pretty much the same stuff).

Once the urushiol oil binds to your skin, it is not possible to remove and you're into "managing the symptoms" stage.

OBRA -- any good home remedies out there for poison oak? I've tried
oatmeal baths (messy, no help), tea tree oil, and ice (both = very
temp relief).

Taking a shot at this group having an ace in the hole remedy that is
better than some of the online suggestions.

Thanks for any insight!

Jim

BTW - picked up the PO, already, at Sincline
