Columbia River Highway

While it may be true that many residents are not fond of cyclists, I do have to say I've never had a problem there, although I ride to Crown Point  and Larch Mt. frequently from SW PDX. I do tend to stop at Celebrate Me Home in Troutdale for a bagel and coffee and they've been extremely friendly  and welcoming for years, even though I always use their bathroom (carefully avoiding stepping on their inventory of carpets with my cycling shoes.  I did have my first flat last week on the way down (a share of glass in the accumulated gravel, not a tack) and as I was changing by the side of the road the flat the owner of the U-pick blueberry farm just West of Corbett pulled out of his driveway and stopped and asked me if I needed a ride back to town.  He was very friendly (I do recommend picking berries there as they seem to have them much later in the summer than the lower elevations).

Just another perspective. I guess I"ve been lucky.

Many of the residents of that area are not particularly fond of cyclists. There have been tack incidents. When you ride in the area be on your best behavior and try to spend money at one of the few businesses there. Do not just use their bathroom or ask for free water. That is evidently a sticky point with them.

The Corbett country market also makes their own smoked salmon pieces that they sell out of the deli and they are out of this world. Since discovering this, the store has become an essential stop on any rides out that way.

I generally try to stop in the market as well. They always seem to have fresh fruit of some sort. Very nice people that own the business. Scott

If you mean the Corbett Country Market, then yes. Got some weird looks from the customers but the people working there are very nice.

I can't seem to ride past there without a desperate need to go in and buy a snack now.

One other thing to note.

On the 4th of July holiday, there always is a parade between Springville and Corbett. They close off the roads and it's a big deal for the community. I made the mistake of riding up there one year, and worse, witnessed cyclist behavior that really fostered animosity. Best to just stay away.

Also, agreed on Woodard, Bell, Mershon, Seidl, Chamberlain, Evans, Loudon and a plethora of other very pleasant uncrowded roads with better climbing.

After a few years I now take the Woodard and Bell Road shortcuts. More
climbing, but out of the way and much more pleasant of a ride. Highly
recommended.

The folks who operate the Corbett Store are super nice. They are aware
of the tack incidents
and are not at all happy about it. It seems for each cyclist who gets a
flat due to a tack,
there are 2-3 who deicde to never ride out that way. And the town
somewhat needs any and all
tourism dollars they can.

I love to ride the Historic Columbia River Hwy.  While there are no shoulders to speak of, there are so many other cyclists out there that cars have come to expect us.  Only residents along that section take that road for business or commute purposes.  The rest are out to enjoy the sights.  While there may be some argument that they are paying attention to the sights instead of the road, I find that it means they are driving more slowly, with no particular  rush.

Indeed, there are other roads, but they have less bike activity (because they are hillier and less direct) and cars can be surprised to come around a corner and find a bike in the lane.  I'll take the Historic Hwy, it's safer.

Have fun, it's one of my favorite places to ride.

Here's an Oregon Randonneurs cue sheet for Pdx->Multnomah Falls.  It's a pretty decent route but you're right, there are some sketch sections.  The road up to Vista is pretty heavily traveled and does not have a great shoulder in some parts.

Any tips for riding out the Historic Columbia River Hwy from Troutdale? The section from Troutdale to Vista house seems a tad sketch to me at times. Is the highway the best route to ride, or are there some better back roads?
