The 16th Annual Cascade Chainbreaker is coming up fast. Sign up now at
OBRA.org.
We have changed the Chainbreaker to Saturday – no longer on Mother’s Day.
We will also be starting an hour later this year, giving out-of-towners an
extra hour to get to Bend. Also, instead of forcing people to wait for
hours for the final finishers to come in, we will be having an awards
ceremony/BBQ at WebCyclery from 5-8PM. We hope you’ll stay the night in
Bend and take the next day to ride more of our wonderful trails. More info
on the party is further down. We've also added a FAT BIKE category (2
laps). We'll mix you in with the Cat 2 racers, but score you separately.
You can register online at OBRA.org (until May 9th), mail an entry
(postmarked by 5/4), sign up the night before at WebCyclery (550 SW
Industrial Way) from 5-8PM, or sign up the day of the race out at the
course (late fee of $5 on race day) from 9:30-10:45. If you are going to
send the entry or just want to fill out the form before you get here –
please use the form that you can find on our website – webcyclery.com, or
you can also find it at
http://meantodd.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/2013_ChnBrkr_reg_form.pdf
If you have the standard OBRA waiver form filled out, we’re still going to
need you to fill out our form. We will have Deschutes Chainbreaker White
IPA on tap if you need to do a little carbo loading before the race
(remember, we aren’t starting until 11AM!)
There will be parking attendants showing people where to park – which is
alongside the main dirt road. Depending on when you get there, you might be
parked pretty far from the start, so please plan accordingly.
The race starts on the same road where everyone is parking – but in front
of all of the cars.
The Finish Area and most spectator friendly viewing area is about 50 yards
to the left of the starting area. Just follow the rocky road down to the
left (at the porta-potties).
The race will go off in waves starting at 11AM. Waves will continue to go
off with 1-2 minute gaps. Wave order is listed at the end of this email.
*Post Race Party – *We’ll be having a post race party/awards ceremony on
Saturday 5-8PM at the shop. We’ll have the podium presentations, and we’ll
also have live music by Truck Stop Gravy. We’ll have a raffle (must be
present to win). We’ll have beer from Deschutes Brewery, Coke, Burgers,
Dogs, Veggie Burgers, Chips, Cookies, and more. All racers get *FREE* food
& drink. You can buy additional meal tickets for $5ea (so bring the whole
family). Bring a camp chair, as comfortable seating is limited (very
little grass). We will move the party indoors if the weather doesn’t
cooperate. If you can’t attend the party, someone else can pick up your
prize. If not, they will be available at the shop or can probably be
brought to another race in the future.
Prizes – $1000 gets split up between the Top 5 Men and Top 5 Women
All other categories will receive trophies for the top 3. Due to limited
field sizes, the only the top 3 overall Cat 3 Juniors will be awarded
trophies. We will keep track of each age division of the junior category
for the overall series competition.
*The Course – *The course is about the same as last year. Everyone does the
“Starter lap” which is about 2 miles. You will only do the starter lap
once. The starter lap comes to an end at the Finish Area. At this point you
will be going out on your “first” lap, which is another 11.5 miles or so.
This means if you are scheduled to race 1 lap, you will do the starter loop
(2mi) + a full loop (~11.5 miles), making your race about 13.5miles. 2 Lap
racers will be going 2+11.5+11.5 = ~25miles. 3 Lap racers will be going
2+11.5+11.5+11.5= ~36.5 miles
*GETTING THERE:*
The course is located to the NW of Shevlin Park, In The Land that has been
known as the Bull Springs Tree Farm, and is hopefully going to be known as
Skyline Forest sometime soon. To get there, head West on
Greenwood/Newport/Shevlin and go past Shevlin Park. At the top of the hill
past the Park, take a left, and then follow the signs out to the course
(it’s a few miles down dirt roads, so don't bring the Ferrari If you don't
have to).
I wouldn’t stick the coordinates into a GPS to get there, as I’ve heard of
people being sent down very rough dirt roads for an extra 10 miles.
*Staying in Bend:
*There are lots of great hotels in Bend. Our favorite is the Pine Ridge
Inn. 1-800-600-4095.
Camping is available at Tumalo State Park, a few miles past Shevlin Park.
800-452-5687
Some people have camped out near the course. It is private land, and I’m
not telling you to do it, and I don’t know the legalities of it, but some
people have done it.
*Course Preview*
We will have the course marked on Friday so you can go out and ride the day
before. We will also be having a couple of “preview rides”. The first will
be on Saturday, May 4th at 10AM (ready to ride at 10). The second will be
at 4:30 on Wednesday. Check our Facebook page – Facebook.com/webcyclery -
for details on where to meet.
