Hello everyone,
Here are a couple short track updates, for those of you who didn't receive the email I sent out earlier today...
-----
Last Monday, we kicked off the 2013 short track season with a bang. 392 racers (plus another 40 kiddie racers) came out to PIR to contest the first short track race of the season. I like to thank everyone who came out to race, cheer or volunteer, and like to give a special shout to the 90+ riders who raced short track for the very first time!
1) Results and photos of short track race # 1.
Results of Monday's race # 1 have been posted on OBRA at http://obra.org/events/21486/results. Best 7 out of 8 races will count towards the overall series standings. Also check out the great action photos shot by Leonard Johnson of Hot Foot photo at http://leonardjohnson.zenfolio.com/p597743410
2) Still time to pre-register for next Monday's Short Track race # 2!
You still have until Saturday noon to pre-register online for our next race at http://www.portlandracing.com/registration.html. It will save you money and time on race day, you'll receive a start line call-up (in the order we received your registration), and it will make things easier for our registration volunteers!
3) Race plates & upgrades.
If you raced last Monday, make sure to bring back your plate and re-use the pipe-cleaners (always use 3 pipe cleaners to attach your plate and make sure to position your plate in front of any brake/shifter cables for maximum readability). If you plan to upgrade or change category at any time during the series, you will have to request a new plate at registration. If you forget or lose your plate, you will have to purchase a new plate at registration (cost: $5).
4) Reminder: FREE weekly short track skills clinics from 4:30 to 5:30pm before the races.
Last Monday, we had more than 30 racers attending the free skills clinics taught by Elaine Bothe of Wenzel Coaching and Ted Byram of Bike N Hike. Next Monday, Elaine and Ted will be back again to teach novice and intermediate racers basic riding skills, including cornering, body position, balancing, and visual skills. Even if you are running late, you can still join in while they're out on the course. You don't have to register in advance for the clinics - or be registered for a race - but you must fill out a series waiver before participating in the clinic.
5) Our first batch of weekly prize winners!
Even if you are not a contender for the podium, you still have a chance at winning one of our much-coveted weekly prizes and primes... like:
- Mary-Margaret Jenkins, who is our first Queen of the Night and wins a $50 gift certificate, courtesy of our Women's sponsor Bike 'N Hike!
- Marcelo Heredia, who wins our first weekly "Pre-Reg" grand prize, a five-person Lumberyard "Party Pass", good for a FREE day shredding - with four of his lucky friends - at the Lumberyard Bike Park!
- Courtney Stella, Thom Schoenborn, Tony Daversa, Dave Wrast, David German and Dan Cheever who are are weekly beer prime winners and will ride home next Monday with a 4-pack of HUB beer. Three varieties (Lager, IPA and Red) in convenient 16oz cans!
- Mike Iten, who get to sport a new set of euro-style MTB tires, donated by Portland-based series gold sponsor Rubena Tires USA.
- Dan Sprouse, who wins a very hip and practical Blaq Mini You Pouch.
And don't forget that throughout the duration of the series, all short track racers get to enjoy a $2 "first beer" special on Monday nights at the Hopworks Bike Bar and a killer $10 "Short Track Special" on Wednesday nights at the Lumberyard.
That's it. Have a fantastic weekend. Weather forecast for Monday looks great with sunny skies and highs in 70s, so hope to see you out at PIR for another night of short track fun!
~Kris
