****Yoga/Stretching for Athletes starting in June at Sports Lab Training

Center****

Why should athletes stretch?

Tight muscles can limit performance. They can reduce the range of

motion, which can result in an inefficient technique and therefore an

increase in energy expenditure. And they can also contribute to injury.

In addition, stretching can aid recovery. Stretching is the most

under-rated and under-used training tool amongst athletes.

Athlete stretching classes are specifically designed for athletes and

are taught in the style of the Iyengar method. Iyengar yoga emphasizes

proper body alignment, and through the use of props (belts, chairs,

blankets, and blocks) allows people with flexibility limitations to

safely perform poses with the correct alignment, protecting the back and

joints. Classes begin with a dynamic warm up to prepare the body for

the stretching workout.

*****Free Conditioning Classes at Sports Lab Training Center*****

A common misconception among athletes is that they can get in optimal

shape by taking part in their chosen sport, and their chosen sport only.

Yet this can lead to imbalances and weaknesses that can ultimately

result in injury. The results of structured conditioning programs are

strong, balanced, functional, and less injury prone athletes. These

conditioning classes focus on different aspects depending on the

training period (base, build, peak, recovery, etc.). They are designed

to improve core body strength, lateral strength, agility and movement,

which in turn leads to a strong, stable body ready for training and

competition.

Come experience a free conditioning class at Sports Lab. Classes last

for 1 hour and will be offered on the following dates and times: May

22nd Thursday 7:30 pm, June 5th Thursday 7:30pm, June 7th Saturday 4pm,

and June 14th Saturday 4pm. Space is limited and is expected to fill up,

so please register by contacting Julie Browning at

****Bike Racing Clinic *****

There are a number of mid-week bike races to enjoy this summer: PIR

racing on Monday and Tuesday nights, and Mt. Tabor racing on Wednesday

These races can provide invaluable training for triathletes.

For anyone who is curious about racing and would like to learn about

bike racing, you're invited to a beginner's clinic. The clinic will be

held at Sports Lab, which is located in NE Portland on Interstate and

Ainsworth.

The clinic will last for about 2 hours and will cover the basics to

prepare you for racing PIR or Mt. Tabor. Some of the topics that will

be covered include: race preparation, the race course, OBRA membership,

safety riding in a group, etc. The indoors portion of the clinic will be

followed by a practice session out at Swan Island.
