Subject: Re: [OBRA Chat] SS Mountain bike or no?
I own one mountain bike. A single speed. I chose SS since it was cheap and very easy to maintain. If the choice is between SS mtb and no MTB, then SS is always better. This year I'm gearing it pretty low and can climb lots of stuff including some rather technical stuff.
Also, it depends on what trails you want to ride as to how well suited SS will be. Locally, I've ridden Scappoose and Longview and both SS pretty well. My "local" trails are moderately technical and the climbs are usually punchy so SS works well for them too. I've found that I generally don't need to do a whole lot of pedalling on the downhills.
I own a couple different cogs and corresponding chains (to get the correct length) and swap gears if I feel like it.
My original SS was an older Redline Monocog 29er. I rode that bike lots and had fun every time I rode it. I now have a Soma Juice that fits a bit better and is outfitted more to my taste. It's still not a feather light bike but again, I have tons of fun every time I throw a leg over it.
Shoot, I even raced PIR short track on that old Monocog. Sure it wasn't as fast as some of the rigs out there but it was still a hoot and good racing all the same.

SS bikes are cheaper than geared bikes. What will I miss out on if I buy a single speed bike instead of a geared on?
thank you.
