It's time to start training for 'cross, and if you're considering racing
for the first time, I HIGHLY recommend a SS bike (if not the SS category).
It teaches you to keep momentum going through features in the course where
gearing could normally bail you out. Plus, you can mutter witty things to
other racers as you pass them:
1. "Ugh, I'm always in the wrong gear."
2. "Wait, we're allowed more than one gear?"
3. "I can't wait 'til I turn 16 and my parents buy me a second gear."
But more importantly, it's a bike that won't break on you during the season
because there's not much on it to break! So it's an inexpensive way in, and
allow you to spend more money on beer and waffles.
$400
The bike is three years old, though it's been a pit bike the past two
seasons. Your typical scuffs from racing. Stock except for a White
Industries Free Wheel (sealed against the elements!). Always cleaned after
races, new-ish bottom bracket, and I put new bearings in the hubs after
last season. Oh, and it's black. ALWAYS BET ON BLACK!
No pedals.
Holler and I'll send some pictures.
