Road conditions on the Hood River side of Lolo

I did that one last weekend, when you get to top of Lolo pass there are two options. Straight which is shorter and steeper, we went this way its hard on a road bike but doable maybe 3 miles, lots of baby head sized rock, ruts, etc. I've been told the option to the right is longer but in much better shape, I'm going to give it a try next time.Tom

Hello Lloyd. I rode it last summer on a road bike with skinny tires (23 or 25 IIRC) and didn't have any problems.

I just took it easy on the downhills and made sure I didn't get too much speed. It was my first time on gravel and it was a little disconcerting the way that you can feel the front and rear wheels slipping in different directions as they roll off the gravel, but... I made it.

The gravel was fairly coarse and not packed.

And when you get back on the pavement, OMG it is just about one of the best downhills, with the narrow lane and close vegetation you feel like you're doing 80MPH. If you don't have a big bug-catching grin on you face there's something wrong with you ;-)

Have fun!

I was thinking of riding up over Lolo pass from the HWY 26 side and down into Hood River. Anyone ridden the gravel road beyond the summit? Doable on road tires (i.e. a good packed down gravel/dirt like Saltzman or FR-45) or is it more of a coarse gravel? Thanks, Lloyd
