We can all be thankful that we have a Master's Racing Night at the track. If it weren't for The Mautners and Veloforma putting on the Tuesday night program we wouldn't have the number of racers continuing to participate into their 70's that we have. By having the program to look forward to, many folks continue to stay in shape way past what would be the norm.
This was brought to my attention this past weekend in Seattle at Marymoor for the WA State Masters Championships. The older the categories went, the fewer participants there were. At 60, I don't consider myself that old but there was only one other racer in my category! For the women, after about 45 there were hardly any racers at all. Now I am not sure that this is the reason for the low turnout of older racers but their weekly "masters night" is a 35+ A and a 35+ B situation (B also is for 60+). I know, because we tried this a few years back, but Masters (in general)do not like to mix it up in mass start races. Especially in a 35+ field.
Timed events like the Veloforma Tuesday night program provides the opportunity for all racers to continue, or to begin, their racing lives as long as they want.
And for that, Thank You to Paul, Meg and Veloforma (Mark) !!
