Pavement conditions notes:
Kliensmith has been recently chip sealed. However, it has been swept as reported by both racers and our people. There is, however, some spotty gravel near the center line (which has not been painted yet). Note to yourselves: stay away from the center line on your descend back down from the finish. And, yes, you should use the course to descend back to the park. It's not the only way back down but it is the fastest. Wildcat is about in the same condition as it was last year, some broken spots on the pavement but safe as long as you watch the road (mostly on your way back down). Watching the road going up will make you faster by avoiding any broken pavement. It's a beautiful course and have fun.
The Uphill Challenge, while being a hill climb, is not the traditional hill climb. There are sections for every type of climber; steep sections for the pure climber, flat, fast sections for the speed demons, milder sections for the power climbers and technical sections for the bike handlers in the crowd. This is a venue not to be missed I promise!
Reviews from last year's race, our inaugural race, were all very good and people loved this venue. This year we are please to be located in the picnic area that is front and center, picnic area #1, so you'll see us immediately upon entering the park.
Eagle Fern Park is located just outside of Estacada and must be one of the most beautiful staging venues in all of OBRA racing. Not only does Eagle Creek run through the park but picnic site #1 has lots of room for the family to enjoy a beautiful day at the park as well. There are beautiful hiking trails for the family and/or the racer that didn't get enough work on the climb. There is wonderful water at the park and the bathrooms are located right next to site #1.
The park is a Clackamas County park and it does have limited parking available so please car pool if at all possible. If the race grows to more than the park can handle at one time, we'll split the start times, with a break in the middle, so that some people start later giving the park some relief in term of cars needing parking at any one time.
Please, please, please pay attention to any signs that the park may have up in terms of parking also. We do not want to loose this venue. If one of our staff asks you to move your car, as it is not in compliance with a park sign, please be considerate and do so politely. We are just trying to protect the venue for the future.
I will send out a couple more updates as we get closer to the event but please start signing up now to get your grab bag.
Did I mention the limited parking at the park and that you should carpool if possible? Thanks you...
