You may have taught a good lesson to the adult with the bike as well as your
children. You did the right thing! It is good when people do not just move
on past wrongdoing because it would be inconvenient to deal with the
situation.

Subject: [OBRA Chat] recovered cyclocross bike
Obralandians,
I need help finding the rightful owner of a 'cross bike I recovered last
night from an unsavory individual.
I was returning from my eldest daughter's first kindergarten potluck, with
my entire family in the car, when I chanced upon a suspicious character
pulling a bike trailer...with a 'cross bike piled on top. Mind you, the
bike in question was not attached, but appeared hastily thrown on top, as it
fell off the trailer, catching my attention as I was going north on NE 33rd.
I slowed to take a look and noticed it was a 'cross variety, and a nice one
at that, and couldn't reconcile the character pulling the trailer, the
nature of it's (lack of attachment), and the nervous and hasty, evasive tact
this guy made when we made eye contact...When I found him several blocks
away, pedaling like a finish line sprint, I pulled up next to him and asked
if it was his bike on the trailer. He was honest and flat out told me, no,
it was not. I told him there wouldn't be any problems if he just left it
right there. To make a short story out of this encounter, I have someone's
bike and want to get it
to them ASAP. I've posted to Craiglist Portland, as a lost item. If
nothing else, I had the opportunity to explain to my 3 and 5 year olds, why
I stopped that man and there was now a bike in the back of the van...
If you know anyone missing a decent 'cross bike, let them/me know and we can
coordinate reacquaintance. Most of us have had that sinking feeling,
finding our beloved bike stolen, I'd like to get this bike back with the
utmost of speed.
Regards,
anondude
