A team of researchers from Stanford University Hospital led by Dr. David
Liang will be conducting a study on the cardiac physiology of elite
endurance athletes who have maintained this level of fitness for many years. It
will take place during registration for Master’s Nationals next Tuesday at the
Old Mill District. This study is particularly important as there is really
not a lot known about what is normal for folks like us who have been
hammering away for many years. What looks like disease in sedentary people may
actually be normal for competitive cyclists in their 40's, 50's, and 60's.
Obviously the results from this study could benefit the entire cycling
community. If you are around Tuesday, September 3, I encourage you to stop by
the registration/packet pickup between 2:00 PM and 6:00 PM to participate. It
should only take about 15 minutes and includes a questionnaire and an
ultrasound examination of your heart.
Also, if you have a couple of hours to spare and would like to assist the
research team (probably pretty mundane stuff like getting waivers filled
out) please contact me directly. Thanks.
