And - don't sit up when you cross the line! It invariably blocks the number for both the camera and the judges doing scoring.

It's not that difficult of a job, except for when numbers aren't correctly placed. Then it becomes really difficult.

As the camera person is recording every number, every lap, anything that makes us have to pause for even a couple of extra seconds to try to decipher really adds up. Please try to properly pin your number. You will make my job easier and all of the officials will be happier people. It also reduces mistakes and allows us to produce results faster and more accurately.

Now that cyclocross season has officially started, I'd like to share some race number placement advice with everyone from an OBRA Official's perspective. I spent the day on Saturday staring at a computer screen and typing everyone's number as they crossed the line every lap. It's not that difficult of a job, except for when numbers aren't correctly placed. Then it becomes really difficult.
So, I've attached an image showing some examples of number placement, both good and bad. For those of you who can't see attachments, I've also uploaded it the web and you can view it here: http://www.dmroth.com/cycling/cx_number_placement.jpg
Let me explain a couple of things about number placement. On its own, one poorly placed number isn't very difficult to deal with. The problem starts when there are many poorly placed numbers.
Please let me (or one of the other friendly OBRA Officials) know if you have any questions about number placement.
Thanks,
