Planet X,based in Sheffield, is the second largest manufacturer of bikes and bike components in the UK, and ranked among the top 10 in Europe. They own and operate On-One bikes, Titus Bikes, SAB Bikes, and distribute Guerciotti.
Our US headquarters are behind the Broadway Toyota, right off of the corner of N Williams and Hancock, 2 doors down from Portland Design Works.
As a Portland based operation, we are committed to participating in and contributing to our local bike community. As such, we've formed a race team primarily focused on drawing new racers to the sport, in all it's wonderful disciplines. (Except DH, you crazy bastards!)
Planet X, as a British Company doing business on a global scale, operates under a direct to consumer model. This means that we don't function the same way most of us in North America are used to bike companies functioning. We don't sell in shops, we don't have a dealer network, we don't do demo tours... We don't even go to Interbike! But we also don't have dealer markups, expensive paint schemes, a huge marketing budget, or any of those other expensive frills that ultimately just make bikes more expensive to the end user. What we do offer are quality products, made in Taiwan and China, sold at prices that are well below what the consumer has come to expect.Does this mean that our products are lower quality, of less value, without warranties, or cheap knock-offs of other companies' goods? No. We use the same factories as the big box companies you know and respect, offer the same warranties and quality control, and design and test our own products.Long story short, we're here to save the consumer some cash and make it easier for enthusiasts to participate in what is a very expensive recreational activity. We strive to make purpose-driven, quality, versatile products at prices that just about anyone can afford.
The Planet X USA Race Team is an extension of this vision. We exist to increase market exposure for Planet X and it's brands, but even more so, our ultimate purpose is to make bicycle racing approachable to a larger spectrum of participants. To that end, we are an open team, and joining is as easy as purchasing a Team Jersey and showing up to events. We do offer substantial team discounts on equipment and clothing, race support, and some pretty great camaraderie. But we're not a team of elite racers, nobody gets paid anything, and the only real incentives we offer for doing well are high fives, pats on the butt, and more heckling at the next race.
We try to hold weekly rides, regular team parties, and will be working hard to host some of our very own, OBRA-sanctioned events in the future.
And, of course, the real point of this message, we host a weekly cross camp!
You've probably seen my previous posts about it, but there's some news, so check it out!
