There appears to be some confusion lately about how the OBRA 1st aid program
works. To attempt to improve this I am sending this note to the list serve
and also directly to all the event organizers on the schedule.
If you are organizing a race and you want me to find someone to provide 1st
aid I will try to do that but I need notice ahead of time. At least 2 weeks
is good although the more time the better. I can't promise that I will be
able to find someone but I usually can, except for events far outside of the
Portland area. The people I arrange will expect to get paid by the race
organizer. If I do not hear from a race organizer then I do not schedule a
1st aid provider. They are not automatically assigned, in contrast to race
officials who are assigned automatically. Race organizers are not required
to provide 1st aid, although many do.
OBRA provides supplies for the 1st aid providers that I arrange. If a race
organizer makes his own arrangements for a 1st aid provider then they are
expected to provide their own equipment. If I have contact with a 1st aid
provider arranged not through me but through the race organizer then it is
possible that the OBRA 1st aid supplies can be used, but only if I have
contact with them before the event. Again, prior notice is important.
Please feel free to let me know if you have any questions.
