Bombproof tires for commuting?

Kevin

2013-09-21

I ride 10,000+ miles a year, all on Continental Gatorskins. I get about a flat per year.

I'm currently rolling Shwalbe Marathons in 32c. No flats after months of riding, and my commute is 24m RT daily. But I gotta say they feel pretty slow compared to just about everything else I've tried. I'd also recommend Panaracer Pasela Tourguards, though you sacrifice some puncture resistance for the better rolling of these tires.

At this time, I can't say I'm impressed with the Gatorskins ... two flats in the first week of using them (both in dry weather) ... though none this week!

I am using 28c and have a 42 mile round trip commute to work.

They are lighter and roll well though. A good tire overall, but not super flat proof. With that said, I'll be trying a different tire next time around, probably giving the Panaracer Ribmo PT 28c (folding) a try.

I've used virtually all the tires mentioned so far. I second the recommendation for Conti Gator Skins. They roll great, they're lighter, and they're tough. Worth the price.I commute into downtown PDX, 30 mi roundtrip, about 3-4 times a week.

PolyX coating (Teflon I think) and when I took it off it had several chards

of glass stuck in the tire that did not puncture through. It is tough tire

that still has somewhat of a decent ride.

Specialized Armadillos are impossible to get on / off as well, but it won't

matter because you'll wear them out or dry-rot them before you ever puncture

them. Will probably repel depleted uranium rounds.

Had OK luck with Conti Gatorskins, too, which are lighter, though.

I just get the cheapest tire I can find and change them more frequently. I haven't found that the interval between flats is any shorter and the cost is less.

Happy Friday. I need new tires for commuting. In the past, I've gone with Vittoria Randonneurs and am leaning toward staying with them unless there is something better on the market. My one gripe about the Vittorias is that it's nearly impossible to get them on the rim.

So, has anyone come out with a better tire than the Vittorias?

Note: I have a 1 hr commute each way so I can't have something that's so clunky that it feels like riding in the Het Meer sandpit.

Thanks in advance,

Dan
