Statement by Chuck Collins
Read this if nothing else. The members are customers.
USA Cycling has an opportunity to unite the broad
bicycle community. The right hand ought to know what
the left hand is doing. I wrote this portion of my
statement three years ago. My mission continues to be
the development of a strong and vibrant bicycle racing
community.
As a Board member I will continue to provide
leadership toward the following areas:
I will continue to advocate that the USCF and USA
Cycling become intensely customer-service oriented.
I will continue to advocate for cooperation among USA
Cycling, industry, advocacy groups, and core elements
of the bicycle community.
I will continue to advocate for a cooperative internal
organization in order to avoid duplication of services
and encourage synergies among the different brands of
USCF, NORBA, USPRO, and NBL.
Two years ago, my peers on the USCF Board of Trustees
elected me to represent the USCF on the USA Cycling
Board of Directors. In my first USAC meeting I was the
only Director to vote ?No? in order to preserve the
membership right to vote. Since May of 1999, I have
participated on USAC?s Finance Committee. I have been
trying to prove that the membership segment of the
organization is critical to the organization?s
financial stability, and fundamentally, the growth of
the sport. I provided the leadership to reduce USAC?s
insurance expense, apposed pressures to raise the
one-day license fee, and resisted plans to increase
promoter?s fees in order to keep the cost of
participation to a minimum. I crafted the legislation
to provide Championships for U23. I crafted
legislation to support LAB and Bikes Belong. I crafted
legislation to support collegiate scholarships. I
continue to advocate for more resources be diverted
back to the local level. I continue with efforts to
validate state championships. I continue to support
strategies to develop collegiate cycling. And more.
Bicycle racing in the United States thrives with a
balanced mix of local participation, professional
athletes, and events. In my opinion, local
participation in events and in local organizations is
vital to the development of a vibrant racing community
and fundamentally supports the development of athletes
and event properties. I want to at least double or
triple the field sizes for every event in the country.
I want communities to embrace bicycling and bicycle
racing as an important and valid element of their
communities. This is my vision.
My history is as follows. I have a graduate degree in
business administration - marketing. My career has put
me in a position to develop local infrastructures that
support the development of a number of sports. I?ve
worked in the around the bicycle industry for more
than eleven years. I've been a licensed rider for
twelve years, most as a cat.2. I've been president of
the Bicycle Racing Association of Utah, I am currently
the president of the EDC Cycling Club in Utah, and I
participate on the Salt Lake City Mayor's Bicycle
committee.
