TT etiquette

This is not a matter of etiquette but actually a matter of rules:

"17.5 - TIME TRIAL ...

17.5.5 No rider may ride closer than 25 meters behind and 2 meters to the

side of another rider. A rider attempting to pass another rider must

complete the pass within 500 meters, otherwise he must drop back at least 25

meters behind the other rider."

The penalty is covered under:

"13. - RIDER CONDUCT ...

13.2 - Misconduct may be punished at the discretion of the Chief Referee.

The forms of misconduct include, but are not limited to:...

- Violating any of the OBRA Racing Rules"

If a rider is observed to be drafting in a TT that info should be reported

to an official. Generally that will mean that the rider is disqualified.

Can someone post the appropriate etiquette for Time Trials?

I caught the rider in front of me and passed. However, he held my wheel

for about 5 miles on the final stretch. It is no big deal. For the

most part I was unaware of his presence. Occassionally, I would see his

wheel off of my left rear. It was just a little frustrating that I

couldn't loose him. I tried a standing burst and increased my speed by

1.5 mph for a short duration to gain some distance. That was not

successful. I finally let up a little (blew up) and he passed about a

mile before the finish. I still came out on top time wise.

Part of the challenge was that we had comparable abilities and it was

not a closed road. He couldn't always stay on the far side of the road

to avoid drafting because of traffic. I am just assuming he was trying

his best not to draft.

I'm sure you'll get the official reply from an official, but typically you

may not be within two bike lengths of another rider. When you pass a slower

rider, you need to move over before you're within that distance, ride past

them two lengths, and then move back to the right. The passed rider needs to

stay back the two lengths, unless they are going to pass you, then they need

to follow the same procedure. Check out section "17.5 - TIME TRIAL " of the

rule book, at http://www.obra.org/word_docs/2003rules.doc . It's more

restrictive than I thought at 25 meters!
