Sorry - it started out pretty short - but like Elkhorn itself... has kinda grown into something bigger...
Thank you again everyone for making the 9th riding of the Elkhorn Classic something special indeed. Nearly every race is epic, so we had to change that up for 2010 to give you "Elkhorn has Everything..." from sunny Friday's to windy afternoons, to a downtown TT finish on Main Street USA, to high paced prime filled crits, to dampness on Dooley.
The officials completed the results before heading home on Sunday so I expect them to be posted shortly. I have asked about the status of Stage 4 and GC results which will be added to the stage 1, 2, and 3 results found at:
I just got back into PDX this evening after spending most of the day meeting with local business leaders and the city about Elkhorn in 2011. Already considerations and discussions are in the works regarding the possibility of a 10th year celebration. I would not hold my breath if I were you though... Rather, grab your mouse, finish this fine update, then head over to the Cascade Cycling Classic website and register before they fill up their fields.
The feedback this year was great and many commented it was one of the smoothest Elkhorn Classics they have seen - ever even given Mother Nature. It could be that the 400 herd cattle drive on Friday finished a lot nearer to the racers arrival in Catherine Creek than anyone really knew or that the High School principal helped wrangle a stray bovine from the middle of the TT course using a rope, atv, and a pretty upset rancher just moments before the first rider came flying over the hill. It could be that the kiddie kilo featured 2 future Elkhorn crit riders who even after the 6-year old "racers" crossed the finish line these two headed another 3 blocks down Main street nearly running through the barriers and out into live traffic. Or, it could be that people just plain loved all that fresh pizza at the Dooley Mtn Finish Festival after a morning jaunt across the country side.
Either way, we had it all. And we still do - There was a full garbage bag of clear rain jackets, gloves, a sock, arm warmers, vests, and other items left at both up at Dooley and down at the all-you-can-eat cookie table at the school. We collected those and brought them back, but I am heading out on vacation so we left them at the Velodrome. Perhaps someone could deliver them to PIR or they will be around at the velodrome home to exciting track racing!!!!
Also, we are still missing one rear wheel, and a front/rear set from another rider both in the Pro/1/2 field. We have asked the volunteer coordinators to check vehicles and the school one more time this week and ask that you do the same.
Callouts to the amazing officials led by Chief Referee Lynn Goss, and Chief Judge Terri Camp who ran a tight ship (they had to - that Lynx camera guy and his ladder seem to be a handful you know). We received many compliments on how well Elkhorn officiating was run and that is in NO small part due to the level and experience our OBRA family is blessed with. Also again the smoothness of registration thanks to Scott Willson and all his work on the new OBRA online registration process. I encourage race promoters to utilize both Scott and the process! Also to the OBRA volunteers from PDX (Scott Sloat, Tony McCray, Steve Lamb, Dave Strader, Terry Keele, and James Newman). These are people who like our corner marshals, drivers, and support folks are giving up not just their time, but their opportunity to race - so that others can.
Finally, thanks to the city of Baker City, Baker High School, and members of the Police, Fire, and local and business communities who allow us to come out so that "Elkhorn is Everything..."
Good luck, be safe, but have fun!
Ernie & all the volunteers from PDX
